In general, this space will deal with the various things I'm doing as a writer and editor, but will occasionally delve into the personal as well. Well, today at lunch, we were talking about various actors, which got me thinking back to my previous career, and I was curious to see whether any of the reviews of work I did turned up online anywhere. Sure enough! Here are the very few I could find, with relevant quotes:

"Criminals in Love" by New Mercury Theater
reviewed by Seattle Post-Intelligencer
"I don't know. It seemed funny at the time. Maybe it was just the inane cockiness that Dave Clapper whips up in his portrayal of the father."
reviewed by Seattle Times
"Thanks to his dense convict father (played by Dave Clapper), the hapless Junior (Christopher Thomle) gets enmeshed in the evil doings of Wineva (Kia Sian), a domineering mobster-moll."

"Salt of the Earth" by Bricolage
reviewed by Seattle Times
"Still, the ensemble cast is strong, each affecting poignant moments by turns, and Ada McAllister and Dave Clapper stand out in vibrant, varied characterizations."

"Peacekeeper" by Northwest Passage Theater
reviewed by Seattle Times
"By day, Hickey and his quirky fellow officer, Dave Clapper, sit in a bunker, 200 feet underground, hoping they will never have to do what they have been programmed to do - launch a nuclear missile."

Kinda disappointing that there aren't any reviews online for my favorite show from my stint in Seattle theater, John Godber's "Bouncers." Ah, well. Funny looking back at these: I was always clearly a character actor, rather than a leading man, and wouldn't have had it any other way. Would be great to get back at it some day.Dave Clapperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01679302197416841061noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8973347.post-6755277648749928022008-03-18T15:06:00.001-07:002008-03-18T15:07:41.953-07:00SLQ issue 20Issue 20 of SmokeLong Quarterly, guest edited by Claudia Smith, is now live.

Issue Twenty (March 15, 2008): The Cockroach by David Barringer «» Trestle by Matt Briggs «» Worried & Wondering by Aaron Burch «» Dead Dog Rising by Kate Hill Cantrill «» Tinder by Chanel Earl «» Scrape by Utahna Faith «» Arlo's Big Head by Stefanie Freele «» Wei-Ch'i by Vanessa Gebbie «» Last Fall by Katherine Grosjean «» David Dreams of Australopithecines by Savannah Schroll Guz «» The Last Stop by Jenny Halper «» Blue by Stephanie Harrison «» Cadet by Tiff Holland «» Slam by Liesl Jobson «» Beret by Darlin' Neal «» Camp by Elizabeth Oliver «» We by Patricia Parkinson «» Seconds Are Ticking By by Nik Perring «» Brother by Sue Powers «» Carol by Sophie Rosenblum «» Elizabeth Bishop by Glenn Shaheen «» Favorites by Gail Siegel «» Blank by Michelle Tandoc-Pichereau «» Medicinal by Girija Tropp «» Interviews: David Barringer «» Matt Briggs «» Aaron Burch «» Kate Hill Cantrill «» Chanel Earl «» Utahna Faith «» Stefanie Freele «» Vanessa Gebbie «» Katherine Grosjean «» Savannah Schroll Guz «» Jenny Halper «» Stephanie Harrison «» Tiff Holland «» Liesl Jobson «» Darlin' Neal «» Elizabeth Oliver «» Patricia Parkinson «» Nik Perring «» Sue Powers «» Sophie Rosenblum «» Glenn Shaheen «» Gail Siegel «» Claudia Smith «» Michelle Tandoc-Pichereau «» Girija Tropp «» Cover Art "Male Figure" by Marty D. Yay! It had been a while since I'd written anything new, and longer still since I'd delved into the whole getting published deal. Per Contra is a great venue, so I'm really pleased.

Also, my flash Spike. Resonance., originally published in FRiGG, has been accepted to be published in a new anthology entitled "Freak Lightning," edited by Pamelyn Casto and Lawrence Greenberg. Not sure of the publication dates yet, but I'll post more when I know more. I've never really pursued getting into anthologies before, so this is pretty exciting.

And, later this month, I'll be traveling back to Chicago to speak to students at my alma mater, Fremd High School, about writing and editing as part of their annual Writers Week. I'm hugely looking forward to this. Weeding through my published work for stories appropriate to read at a high school is proving somewhat of a challenge, but I think I've got it covered. Can't wait!

Finally (and I probably will blog about this at SLQ News once I have the final schedule), I'll be presenting at Pecha Kucha again in about a week and a half. The theme is love, which is a challenge, since most of the stuff we publish in SLQ isn't really about love in the usual Valentine's Day sense. Had a blast when I did this in December, and really looking forward to doing it again. Looks like a stellar lineup this time, too. Just had a crazy snowy weekend that was virtually perfect: it snowed like mad for two days and then melted before the week began, so my commute wasn't impacted in the least. Got to have snowball fights with the kids and they built (and destroyed) snowmen. Also swung by the office to show them where I work now, and my boss happened to be in and snapped a pic, which y'all can see here. Sunday, spent the day with Ellen, Kate, the boys, and my mom and her husband Jim, who are in town for a week to meet his first grandchild, who is now a few months old (son of his son—although Jim has two kids who both live in Seattle, I've never really thought of 'em as stepsiblings per se, since Mom and Jim married after I was already out of the house). Had a good time with them, and will be having dinner with them and Ellen again tonight.Dave Clapperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01679302197416841061noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8973347.post-74064685422799949822007-11-01T10:04:00.001-07:002007-11-01T10:12:58.681-07:00Top Ten Page Views for OctoberExcept for the juggernaut of "Pornography" and another strong showing by John Leary, the top ten is comprised entirely of flashes from the September 15 issue. We had a News section there a couple years ago, but it was infrequently used. We re-launched it last week, with SLQ staffers Kelly Spitzer, Thomas White, and me, joined by uber-lit bloggers Myfanwy Collins, Katrina Denza, and Matt Bell. I think it's averaging about two new posts a day, and the info folks are getting posted there is as terrific as you would expect from having read the individuals' blogs previously. The news covers more than just SLQ--we're seeking to get flash news of any kind out there, so hopefully, it'll be a great resource for writers of flash. You definitely owe it to yourself to check it out. When we were checking out the building a couple months ago, many of us walked across it. I weighed in at 195. Since cutting Coke almost entirely out of my diet due to kidney stones, I've noticed that my stomach looks flatter (not flat, mind you, but not so Buddha-like). Sure enough, I just walked across the scale and it came up 185. Almond's back on top again, probably because linkage to Amato from the front page went away on the 15th when the new issue went live. Speaking of Almond, I'm reading the galley of his next book right now, and there's an essay in there about Vonnegut that's beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.

Stories
1. Since I'm late posting this time around, I took a little time to delve a little more deeply. 54 stories last month had 100 or more page views. Pretty cool. I know I'm going to forget something, so I'll come back and edit as I remember. In no particular order:

Night Train is up and running again! And they're taking submissions. Of particular interest, they plan to publish one new flash every week. So go! Submit!

insolent rudder has a new issue up, with fiction by SLQ editor Katrina Denza, SLQ author Davin Malasarn, and SLQ author-to-be (in our upcoming issue) Debbie Ann Eis. The author spotlight shines on previous SLQ guest editor and top ten stalwart Jeff Landon, and the author interview features frequent SLQ author Susan Henderson. Also features the always cool Dennis Mahagin. That, my friends, is one hell of a lineup.

The latest Kelly Spitzer's Writer Profile Project is up: Ann Walters, who has graced SLQ's pages a couple times now, and is a very cool woman to boot. I especially loved her answer about her profile photograph: totally heart-melty.

Vestal Review has a new issue up featuring, among others, SLQ author and Flashquake editor Didi Wood.

Speaking of Flashquake, their spring issue is up, and features SLQ alum Wayne Scheer and the aforementioned Kelly Spitzer.

NOÖ Journal's latest ish is up, too, and features no SLQ alums! But it still kicks ass.

And have you read Juked? They update so frequently that it's difficult to single out an issue, per se, but some recent authors include Ann Walters (that same groovy chick in the interview link above), Cami Park, Kathy Fish, Myfanwy Collins, Elizabeth Ellen, and Joseph Young. That's a lot of very, very fine reading right there.

3:AM Magazine is another frequent updater, and some of the folks recently featured there are Claudia Smith, Kim Chinquee, Debbie Ann Eis, and Myfanwy Collins.

Finally, my absolute favorite annual issue of Hobart is live. My Mariners are 2-0 to start the season against the dastardly Oakland A's (against whom my M's went 2-17 last season!) and I'm feeling giddy. Reading Hobart's annual baseball stories only increases the giddiness.Dave Clapperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01679302197416841061noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8973347.post-14841735156806760792007-04-02T12:52:00.000-07:002007-04-02T13:01:29.446-07:00Top Ten Page Views for March
Almond's at the top, as usual, although his page views dipped below a thousand for the first time in ages.
